More on Vikram Prabhu's next with Saravanan

Its going to be one young and creative venture, if one can say so. For as IG had earlier reported 'Engaeyum Eppothum' fame director Saravanan who shot to fame with his very debut will be joining hands with Vikram Prabhu, grandson of thespian Sivaji Ganesan.

The yet-to-be-titled venture will be produced by Thirupathi Brothers and will have music by GV Prakash say industry insiders.

Vikram Prabhu is currently awaiting the release of Kumki, a film by Prabhu Solomon that marks Vikram's debut in Kollywood. Kumki is also produced by Lingusamy's Thirupathi Brothers, it may be mentioned. Recently Vikram Prabhu turned down the Sattam Oru Irutarai remake as he didn't want to do a remake at an early stage in his career.

Vivek in Nagesh's role in 'Neerkumizhi' remake!

Director Selvaa of Naan Avan Illai fame, is working on three films. While one will be an original, two other will be remakes, the first a remake of Hindi film 'Malamaal Weekly' and the second will be a remake of 'Neerkumizhi', a yesteryear blockbuster by K Balachander.

"I want to remake this classic by Balachander with Vivek in the lead role, the original saw veteran Nagesh in the lead. My producers will be acquiring the rights shortly. Its really important to choose films that today's young haven't watched for remakes so that they find it fresh and avoid comparison", says Selva.

The first script which is an original will be set in Fiji island and boast of debutants in the lead, while the remake of Malamaal Weekly will see young actors in the lead unlike the Hindi version that saw ace actors Paresh Rawal and Om Puri.

Do you think Vivek can do justice to the role essayed by Nagesh? It will be interesting to watch Vivek in this film especially since his sense of comedy is compared to that of the latter's many a time by critics.

Mugamoodi tidbits

Its said that Jiiva's mask was made in a specially designed vaccuum chamber to get the perfect leathery fit and a smooth outer finish and the suit originally weighed 8 kilos but was brought down to 4 kilos by repeated experimentation.

However it was still a nightmare for Jiiva to act with the suit on because of the non-breathable silicone that heats up the body within minutes. Also, the limited flexibility of the silicone rubber made it difficult for nimble action sequences demanded by the kung-fu based fight scenes. Remember Mugamoodi has some high voltage action scenes?

Mugamoodi is a superhero film aimed at family audiences, boasting off a clean script. Its about the superhero within oneself and Pooja Hegde is said to play a television news reporter in it. Nasser will be seen in a pivotal role whilst music is by K.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, Mugamoodi releases big tomorrow (August 31).

The makers have made it clear that Mugamoodi is about the superhero within oneself and will be tailor-made for Indian audiences and not in lines of international superhero films.

Prasanna - I doubt if this gesture of Sneha could be repaid

Yesterday (August 28) was Prasanna's birthday and his first birthday after entering wedlock. The actor is elated over his wife, Sneha's gift to him on his birthday.

"I have been flying high and still can't come to terms with the happenings of yesterday, Birthdays were always there...Parties with bouquets, cakes with candles and what not, when people around me asked what's special for this birthday I said it is my first birthday as a husband that's it", starts off Prasanna.

"But my wife had other ideas; she made it the birthday of my life...she sprang a surprise by taking me to a school for the visually challenged. We had lunch with the children there, gifted them new clothes and spent quality time there. I doubt if this gesture of my wife could ever be repaid...I have to do it with just a month and half away...breaking my head on this difficult yet satisfying task after the overwhelming moments of yesterday!", says Prasanna.

Remember Sneha's birthday is on October 12. We'll have to wait to see if the actor manages to pull out something special not just for Sneha but for the others as well, as she did...

Amy mocks at reports about her causing trouble for Shankar's I

Amy Jackson and Ek Deewana Tha (Vinnaithandi Varuvaya) co-star, Prateik Babbar were visibly head over heels for one another and were dating ever since the film kick-started. It's also said that the duo moved in together in Mumbai for a while.

However, a leading daily has now subtly suggested that the duo have parted ways, adding to the rumors that occurred few weeks back. It's said that Prateik's over possessive nature brought about this break up and Amy is not over it yet, and the pretty damsel is partying hard in Chennai to get over this relationship.

Rumors had it recently that Shankar asked Amy to not party as its affecting her look the next day during the shoot of the film!

However, Amy, the thorough professional that she is, has indirectly mocked at these reports in a lighter vein. "Wow, must be out partying with my frigging mother here in Chennai... The party capital of the world", she wrote on her microblogging page. Remember Chennai's clubs shut down early and celebrities don't really party hard in here?

Amy definitely knows how to shut those miscreants early in her career! Way to go girl!

Shankar Vs SS Rajamouli

Indian cinema has gone through the ages and has undergone quite a lot of retrospect to offer for everyone. While South India has come up with a lot of promising flicks, it is still far from perfect, especially now with movies flocking theatre halls every weekend. Secretly behind the scenes, there are highly driven and talented directors, scared yet influential distributors and producers who can weave around them for profit.

Amidst all this, however, a few have come up battling against odds and establishing their own markets, and brands that have significantly impacted the way people around them and everywhere looked at cinema (even film schedules after a certain point of time). Today we look at two such directors, Mr. S.Shankar and Mr. S.S.Rajamouli. I believe most of us have heard of them, but a few introductions are in order, nonetheless.

Both these men are recognized well in at least South India, if not in it's fullest. It's obvious they have been very successful. Both of them have come up with the blockbuster hits (biggest numbers in South Indian Cinema, to be precise) at some point of time - Endhiran for Shankar and Maghadheera for Rajamouli. They both indulge in making commercialized movies (one maybe more than the other), and they both seem to be sharing a similar love for using special effects in their movies. But are they really perfect and when we put them head to head, which one is going to come on top?

Let's take a closer look at our man Shankar. He may be the highest paid director in India today, but his journey has been long. Unlike directors who appear and disappear, Shankar didn't take long to make his mark. His first film, Gentleman shot him to fame and earned him two Best Director awards. His career followed up with more success stories in Kaadhalan, Indian, Sivaji, Anniyan and Endhiran. Even his latest of the pack, Nanban is a blockbuster. However, there are two small dents in the form "Naayak" and "Boys" which didn't turn out so well for Shankar. A closer look at his movies explains why.

All of Shankar's movies focus on a national issue, something that needs a lot of attention. In each of his attempts, he tries to get close to an answer that never approaches India. The fact that his movies have so much commercialism is weird, especially the way the lead character can switch between being a casual heroine wooer into someone who can't tolerate injustice scene after scene. Even more, the audiences seem to love the way he goes about it. Highly expensive sets, never before seen (in Tamil cinema) special effects and action sequences that keep us wondering if they are even possible, are trademark Shankar attributes. This appears to be his success formula and he doesn't really want (or intend on) giving up.

On the other side, we have Rajamouli who came out of a family of means, many of whom had been a part of cinema. However, it took him 8 long years before he could find the right pair of shoes. His debut came in 2001 with Junior NTR's Student No. 1 and it became a roaring hit. While Shankar enjoyed an even quicker rise to fame, Rajamouli had big releases follow up one after the other within a short period of time. Sye, Chatrapathi, Vikramakudu and Yamadonga all continued his success story and by then, this man had gotten a lot of attention. Then came the mother of all Telugu films, Maghadheera, in 2009 which sealed his success in Tollywood.

While the former focused on nationalistic tops, Rajamouli was more into straightforward commercialism. He made no attempts to hide it and in each of his movies, and it always turned out and impressed audiences. Visuals and sets of course greatly praised, especially in Yamadonga and Maghadheera and flicks went on to become blockbusters even when they lacked the catchiness of a Shankar movie (which also saw huge success when dubbed into Telugu). This calls to doubt whether his attempts would have become as successful if they were made for a different type of audience. The answer came in the form of Eega (Naan Ee in Tamil)which was released both in Tollywood and Kollywood and got good reviews.

In a direct comparison, Shankar and Rajamouli appear to share a lot of similar aspects. They enjoy making exquisite songs that involve spending a lot of money and they do not mind having a fair amount of action in their movies. But even when they have almost the same number of movies (11 for Shankar and 9 for Rajamouli), it does appear quite clearly that Shankar is the leading horse here. He does appear to play the ropes quite well and knows exactly how to use his heroes impressing audiences across classes. Rajamouli while playing catch up has seen enough success (without any dents in fact). When he starts making more multi-lingual films, it will be more fun to see sums up. Looks like these guys are gonna continue to make commercial films after all.

So what do you think? Can these guys learn something from each other? Who, according to you, is better?

Trisha: No I'm not engaged to Rana!

While Tamannah is busy denying reports that she's bid an adieu to Tamil cinema, Trisha is denying several reports that are linking her with hotshot actor Rana Daggubati.

It was said that Trisha and Rana Daggubati got engaged in a private affair in the presence of family and friends and some pictures of their family get together were leaked! It was further buzzed that Rana presented Trisha with a platinum ring and a jewelry set.

"It's baseless. Rana and I have been friends forever and it's not fair to link us or spread rumors about an engagement that didn't happen. I'm here to stay and I haven't even thought about marriage yet, I'm working on 3 Tamil movies", says a miffed Trisha.

Kamal to work with Crazy Mohan?

Although rumors about this were sparked off quite sometime ago, it's buzzed again now that Kamal Haasan will work with Crazy Mohan post Viswaroopam for a quickie. The film with dialogues by Crazy Mohan is touted to be helmed and produced by Kamal.

It's further said that this film will be wrapped before Kamal's Hollywood project with Barrie Osborne goes on floors. The duo has been meeting several times of late and sources suggest the film will go on floors shortly.

However we can't be sure if Kamal will be directing the film as suggested by few media reports since he just helmed Viswaroopam. Meanwhile, 'Viswaroopam' is taking shape in a fast pace. The film stars Kamal Haasan along with Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah.

CFBC bans 'A' certificate films on TV!

The Indian film industry is in a state of shock for the Central Board for Film Certification aka CBFC has banned 'A' certificate films entirely, for broadcasting on any television channels! As per this new rule, a film certified with an 'A' certificate by the CBFC cannot be screened on television channels.

So far, such films were censored for TV screening and were allowed to be screened after 11 pm. But now, the CBFC has announced that it will not re-certify the films, thus meaning films with an A certificate are unfit for TV screening!

This is a major shocker for producers; as a chunk of revenue from films comes from satellite rights and many films especially action entertainers have 'A' certificates due to the violent content or so. A ban on these films on TV is going to affect the entertainment market at many levels and directors will be forced to come out with U films, even if the script demands otherwise.

Do you agree with CBFC's decision? And what will happen to the films that boast off an 'A' and have been already bought by TV channels for whooping prices? Only time will tell the tale.

What Rajini spoke to Shiva?

Though 'Thillu Mullu' is a light-hearted film, director Badri, who is remaking the cult hit, is not ready to take things light.

Apparently to prove this, he and the new version's hero Shiva, recently called on K Balachander, the director of the original version; Superstar Rajinikanth, the lead actor; and Kamal Haasan, who did a guest role.

On their meeting with Rajini, Badri says, "The Superstar told Siva that he feared a lot when Balachander wanted to do Thillu Mullu with him. 'Because I was doing only action roles before that. But KB sir completely changed my body language for Thillu Mullu and he ensured that the film became a hit. But you need not worry since you have already established yourself in humor roles. I am sure you are going to rock', said Rajini."

Badri adds: "When we met Kamal, he revealed that actually he wanted to produce and play the lead role in Thillu Mullu, but changed his mind later.'Only because of that I did a cameo in Thillu Mullu', Kamal said."

The director further says that Balachander liked the casting of the movie- Shiva, Isha Talwar, Prakash Raj and Oorvasi.

He also says Shiva would fit the role. "Rajini's films like Enthiran, Baadsha and Padayappa should not be remade with Shiva in the lead. But Thillu Mullu can be remade."

Title trouble: 'Samar' director explains

Director Thiru is optimistic that the hurdle before his second directorial venture 'Samar', over its title, will be solved amicably.

It is to be noted that a Madurai court has ordered an interim stay against the release of 'Samar', which has Vishal in the lead, while hearing a petition filed by a producer called Vijay.

In his plea, Vijay alleged that he was producing a movie under the title 'Samar', with newcomers in the lead roles. "We have registered the title in the Film and TV Producers Association last year and have renewed it this year," he said.

Stating that a Vishal-Trisha starrer film produced by Ramesh Thandra and directed by Thiru was also being made under the same name, Vijay requested the court to issue a stay on the film, following which the order was issued.

Reacting to this, Thiru says, "When we registered the titled Samar, we heard that another producer too was planning to register the same title. Following this, we solved the issue then itself. I don't know why it has surfaced again. And I am hopeful that my producer will solve the issue now."

Sasikumar, the 'Superman'

It's not without reason we give this sobriquet to Sasikumar, the man who kickstarted his journey with 'Subramanyapuram' a few years ago.

For, in the recent times, hardly anyone had proved himself/herself in the top three trades of cinema industry- actor, director and producer.

After establishing himself in all the above said areas in his very first film itself, Sasikumar has since then been switching from one trade to another in the movies that followed.

'Nadodigal' brought out the actor in him, while 'Pasanga' spoke about his penchant to produce meaningful movies. 'Easan' is his directorial venture once again, while in 'Poraali', he fared well as an actor and producer.

And now, Sasi is busy with 'Sundara Pandian', a film which he is producing besides playing the lead role. It is being directed by Prabhakaran, who is none other than his former associate.

"For the first time, I am playing a romantic hero in this film," says Sasi with a smile. "Sundara Pandian is a refreshing story and I enjoyed doing it," he adds.

Interestingly, Sasikumar has stepped into Mollywood too. He has played a crucial role in 'Masters' and his performance has won him accolades.

With 'Sundara Pandian' getting ready to hit the screens, all eyes are on Sasikumar. And he will not disappoint, one can say, going by his past records.
